About

Eight years ago John and I started talking about retiring overseas.  You know what it’s like: the newspapers are full of horror stories illustrating how the country is going downhill; we have a typically British rain-sodden summer; prices are rising all the time; there is a tube strike so the dreadful journey to work gets even worse – it’s time to get out of here!  I’m sure that strikes a chord with many people, but in our case it wasn’t just talk, as we made the decision to buy what seemed to be our dream home in Santa Ana del Monte, just outside the Spanish town of Jumilla, which is famous for its wine.

In “Retiring the Olé Way”, I describe the trials and tribulations of buying an off-plan property in Spain.  The book chronicles my adventures with my husband John as we moved from the hustle-and-bustle of London to our new home in rural Southern Spain over three years ago.  Although the book was aimed at couples like us, wishing to enjoy an active retirement in the sun, I hope that people of all ages will find it an entertaining and informative read.

John and I thought that the best aspect of living in Jumilla would be the wine, or the sunshine, or the relaxed way of life, however we quickly discovered that it is the people.  Jumillanos are friendly and welcoming and, although we are comparative newcomers, whenever we walk around the town somebody recognises us and says “Hola”, “Buenos dias” or even (especially the children) “Hello”.

Living in Jumilla is nothing like living on the coast in an expat community and the town bears no resemblance to Benidorm.  In this blog I will describe the ups and downs of our new life in Spain, as well as hints on saving money when visiting Spain.
